Grant Application Process
New to the grant writing process? We'd like to hear from you! Click here to fill out a short survey.
Whether you are applying for a grant for the first time or have applied before, the information in this section is designed to help you complete your grant application as smoothly and efficiently as possible.
Step 1: Determine the kind of support you are seeking. Individual artists apply under the Individual Artists Project Grants category, while arts organizations or institutions can apply for grants listed under either Arts Organization Project or Operational grants.
Step 2: Determine which artistic discipline or activity you are engaged in. Choose from the list of sub-categories to determine which one your activity belongs to. This is the grant you need to apply for.
Step 3: Once you have selected the grant application you need, read the application guidelines thoroughly.
Step 4: Complete the application, gather the required supporting materials and submit your application online. The AFA does not accept late or incomplete applications. You can always contact any of the Arts Branch staff if you require additional assistance.
Sign-up for Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT)
If you receive grants from the AFA, this is a great time to transition to Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) instead of cheques. This method is more efficient and cost effective to administer. It reduces the risk of cheques being lost, intercepted or compromised as well as delivery delays resulting from any potential Canada Post strike or if you move.
All you need to do is scan and send a void cheque AND direct deposit form (yes, we need them both) to firstname.lastname@example.org or mail it to:
Arts Branch, Alberta Culture and Tourism
10708 105 Avenue
Edmonton AB T5H 0A1
... and your next AFA grant will go directly into your bank account!
Completing your AFA Grant Application
Follow these steps to make sure you correctly complete your grant applications – remember that incomplete applications are not accepted!
Read the program stream guidelines carefully! It is important to determine your program stream eligibility.
The AFA has moved to GATE (Grant Administration Tracking and Evaluation) - an online grant application system.
Applicants need to complete a GATE User Profile to begin their application process. Please contact registrationAFA@gov.ab.ca to begin that process.
If you need to make a change to your applicant profile in the middle of completing an application form, follow these steps.
