Across Alberta: Paintings from the Artist in Residence

What happens when an artist turns the province into her studio? For Samantha Williams-Chapelsky that means packing up her paints and easel and embarking on a year-long journey across Alberta to capture its diverse landscapes.
Samantha embarked on this journey as part of her term as Alberta’s Artist in Residence and Arts Ambassador from October 2024
until September 2025. Inspired by Impressionism, Samantha visited over 40 sites to paint outdoors or en plein air. From Jasper’s jagged mountain peaks to the golden prairies around Lethbridge, these paintings, shaped by fleeting light and shifting weather, are full of immediacy and energy. Back in her studio, with time to reflect, Samantha revisited these places, transforming her memories into more nuanced, layered compositions.

About the artist
Samantha lives in St. Albert and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Alberta. Her work has been widely exhibited and is held in several collections, including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. She is an international art instructor and lecturer.
