TREX: Art on the Move featuring Montageries

A red shape of the province of Alberta on its side with wheels on it, so it looks like a truck, and multicoloured triangles shoot out from the back wheels

See the first in a special series of exhibitions featuring shows from the AFA's renowned Travelling Exhibitions (TREX) program. TREX: Art on the Move is perfect for families and schools eager to learn more about Alberta art. The first exhibition in the series features Montageries.

This exhibition opens February 13 and runs until September 30. Come to the opening reception on February 19!

Montageries

What happens when you blend "montage" with "memories?" You get Montageries, a curated selection of 19 artworks that explore how disparate elements form a unified whole.

Montageries invites you to look beyond the frame. Each piece—from the intricate silkscreens of Katie Ohe to the pixelated compositions of Chris Cran—acts as a flash of memory, offering a glimpse into Alberta’s evolving cultural identity.

Originally curated by Ash Slemming and organized by the Alberta Society of Artists to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the AFA Art Collection, Montageries has travelled to nearly 30 venues across the province. Discover how individual fragments drawn from the AFA's collection of nearly 10,000 objects tell a much larger story of our province.

Step into the art house and explore themes of expansion and fragmentation through the eyes of Alberta's most significant visual artists.

About TREX

TREX strives to ensure every Albertan is provided with an opportunity to enjoy fully developed exhibitions in schools, libraries, health care centres and smaller rural institutions and galleries throughout the province.

The TREX program assists in making both the AFA's extensive art collection and the work of contemporary Alberta artists available to Albertans.

TREX is coordinated by four regional organizations that create 12 travelling exhibitions each year.
