About the Workshop

Join GABS for a fun afternoon to create your own Jack Rabbit lantern (Height ~12”-18” TBC).

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of creating a lantern, including wire bending, papering methods and how to play with lights with a crash course in electronics!

By the end of the course, you will have completed your own illuminated lantern, as well as acquired the skills and knowledge to create charming lanterns or enchanting creatures to brighten up any space you choose to in the future.

GABS is a local Edmonton artist who creates works of whimsy and light that delight unexpectedly. She draws inspiration from the Giant Lanterns of Japan’s Nebuta Matsuri and on her own has developed the necessary skills to create unique lanterns & creatures for local festivals and parades. Whether it be a life-sized mammoth on skis, a flying whale, or a roller-skating bison ambling about, these brilliantly glowing creatures illuminate nature and invite us into a world of wonder and magic.

Simple materials like paper, wire, and some old bedsheets can be transformed by the touch of an artist into magical creatures and imbued with life by the light of an ordinary lamp.
