Celebrating Women's History Month through the memory of Isla Burns

Date: Oct 21, 2024

As we observe Women’s History Month this October, the AFA is honoured to share We Never Said Goodbye by Isla Burns as our feature Work of the Week.

Burns, a pioneering sculptor who passed away on September 25, 2024, was raised in Edinburgh and later rooted in Alberta. Burns habitually works with found metal forms such as: pipes, bars, angles, tools, old musical instruments and patterned plates with raised textures. She brought a powerful female perspective to a medium traditionally dominated by men.

Her work combines industrial strength with graceful curves, reflecting her innovative approach. We Never Said Goodbye, exemplifies this approach—melding industrial materials with a deep, emotional expression of movement and transformation. Isla’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of artists and viewers alike.

Burns studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design (now the Alberta University of the Arts) and earned her graduate degree at the University of Alberta. Over her 25-year career, she played a pivotal role in shaping Edmonton’s steel sculpture scene.

Join us in celebrating her artistic legacy and the contributions of women in Alberta’s art community.
