November Sunset
The AFA is pleased to feature Gisela Felsberg’s November Sunset as the Work of the Week. This piece is one of six artworks from Felsberg that are featured in the AFA Art Collection.
About the artist
Gisela Felsberg is an oil painter who works in a traditional style suggestive of a quiet romanticism. The brushwork and tonal variations of her paintings are reminiscent of the soft and atmospheric traditions of northern European painting, but her landscapes capture the reality of nature as she sees it while painting on location throughout Alberta. Felsberg most often paints in the Gold Creek area, south of Vilna, Alberta, where she has built her home and studio.
Felsberg began her art studies in Germany, and continued them with art classes in the Extension Department at the University of Alberta in the late 1960’s. In 1972, she graduated with honours and was given a job teaching painting at the same institution. Her canvasses - spontaneous, realistic, and strong of colour and brushstroke - favour the natural world of the prairie and mountain vistas in her adopted home province.
Felsberg travelled and painted often, conducting workshops in oil and watercolours, both indoors during the winter months and outdoors in the warmer weather. Her workshop schedule regularly included extra time to paint in the Rocky Mountains.
Gisela’s work hangs in various corporate collections, including Esso Resources, Price Waterhouse, Chieftain Developments, the Agent General’s office in Hong Kong, and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
