Gallery@501 Members’ Exhibition and Opening Reception

Strathcona County is pleased to present, Journeys and Transitions, a new exhibition featuring artworks by 75 members of Gallery@501. The exhibit opens at Gallery@501 on May 1, 2025, and shows until June 21, 2025.

Journeys and Transitions brings together artists who express their unique perspectives through works that explore physical, emotional, and spiritual transformations. This exhibition explores personal and collective experiences of change, resilience and self-discovery, highlighting the moments that shape our identities and redefine our paths. Visitors will see this theme expressed in a diverse range of media which may include painting, sculpture, textile art and more. The artists invite viewers to discover the journeys in the exhibit and reflect on the ways we navigate life’s ever-evolving landscapes in our own lives. During this exhibition, everyone is welcome to engage in a hands-on, co-creative project started by the Gallery members. Visitors can add their own interpretation of a personal journey or transition onto a collaborative mixed media artwork.

The annual members’ show provides an opportunity for artists to connect with other artists, create new work based on a theme chosen by the members and learn about the diverse art practices of their peers. Gallery@501 welcomes artists at any stage in their career, as well as arts enthusiasts, to become members and experience a supportive artistic community. The public is invited to join the exhibiting artists at the opening reception on Thursday, May 8 at 6:30 pm at Gallery@501.

This event and admission to the gallery are free.

Body

The Art of Hide Tanning - Tradition Inspiring the Present and Future is a series of commissions to link the past, present and future of Indigenous art.

This project features new works by Amy Malbeuf and Ruby Sweetman created through the traditional thirteen-step Woodland Cree hide tanning process taught at Portage College in Lac la Biche, Alberta. The completed works will be exhibited at the Museum of Aboriginal Peoples' Art and Artifacts at Portage College. Learn more about the hide tanning process on Portage College's website.

Ruby Sweetman is of mixed Cree ancestry and has been a professional artist and an instructor in the Native Arts and Culture Program for over 20 years.

Amy Malbeuf is an award winning Métis multidisciplinary visual artist from Rich Lake, Alberta who works in a variety of mediums such as caribou hair tufting, beadwork, installation, performance, and video.

  • Scroll through the slideshow above to see images of the artists and their works.

If you cannot make it up to Lac la Biche to see the exhibition in person, fear not; you can see a preview of the artworks and the hide tanning process in the video below.

Portage College also made a video about this Commemorative Art Project. Watch it on their YouTube channel.

These works travelled to Edmonton and were exhibited at the Alberta Craft Discovery Gallery, from April 14 until May 26, 2018.
