Our instructors teach a variety of group programs at various Recreation Centres in the City including the City Arts Centre. As an instructor, you must be confident and competent in your field and enjoy teaching others. You will be required to plan, prepare and teach lessons to a variety of skill levels. Opportunities are available in both child/youth instruction, family programs and adult program areas. 

Positions available in the following arts areas:

  • Handmade Care Products (adult, families and youth)

What you will do:

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that are skill level appropriate 
  • Assess skill levels of students and adapt lesson plans accordingly
  • Ability to problem solve and assess the needs of participants
  • Good communication skills
  •  Ability to work independently with good time management skills
  • Instruct on all technical aspects of the visual arts medium and style
  • Coach participants on proper techniques 
  • Implement safety and clean-up procedures established for the facility in keeping with OH&S standards 
  • Attend training sessions as required
  • Create an inspiring learning environment that is engaging, supportive and inclusive
  • Display professional communication and interpersonal skills in a classroom setting
  • Share knowledge while mentoring adults in a supportive social setting
  • Good classroom management and ability to work with children
  • Ability to have an organized plan to achieve student outcomes

Qualifications

:

  • Minimum 18 years of age is required 
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
  • Experience instructing Children/Youth (1-17 years) or Adults (18 + years)

Skills required for success: 

  • Completion of formal training in your field or equivalent experience considered an asset 
  • Proven skills in area of specialization 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of technical aspects in handmade soap making or body care products. 
  • Experience instructing a wide range of skill levels and diverse groups of participants (Children/Youth ages 5-17) and/or families ranging in ages. 
  • Previous teaching experience in a classroom setting or equivalent 
  • Ability to be creative, flexible and a problem solver 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a classroom setting with a variety of participants

Conditions of employment:

  • Possession of Valid Standard First Aid and CPR Level C certificate is a requirement for Child/Youth Instructor
  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
  • Applicants may be tested

Work Environment:

  • Location is dependent upon availability and class schedule but could consist of City Arts Center, ArtsHub Ortona, The Orange Hub, and various City of Edmonton Community Recreation Centers such as Booster Juice Recreation Centre, Central Lions Recreation Centre, Clareview Community Recreation Centre, Coronation Park Sports & Recreation Centre, and Dr. Anne Anderson Community Centre
  • This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance
