New AGA Opportunity - TD Curator of Indigenous Creativity

The Art Gallery of Alberta (AGA) is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative individual to join its Exhibitions and Collections team as TD Curator of Indigenous Creativity.

This new full-time, 2-year position is supported by TD's Ready Commitment funding initiative. This funding will support the creativity and growth of the successful candidate's curatorial practice, amplifying the voices of Indigenous artists and celebrating the creativity of Indigenous communities. The successful candidate will initiate and collaborate on new exhibition development, collections acquisitions and animation, public programming, and community engagement in partnership with artists, colleagues and organizations across Canada, to support, share and preserve Indigenous creativity.

Reporting to the Executive Director/Chief Curator, the TD Curator of Indigenous Creativity will be responsible for developing exhibition projects and programs that highlight the work of Indigenous artists and creators with AGA audiences.

Projects developed by the Curator will focus on sharing and uplifting Indigenous creativity and the work of contemporary Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists, for promotion locally and nationally.

Qualifications

• A degree in Art History, Museum Studies, Visual Arts, or a related discipline/special focus on Indigenous arts, culture and creativity, and/or direct knowledge of Indigenous arts and culture through lived experience
• 5 years work experience in a public art gallery, museum, or related environment, and/or experience curating in the area of Indigenous art and/or culture, including in researching, curating and implementing exhibitions
• Demonstrated experience working with artists, cultural groups, and organizations, with an interest in building and fostering relationships. and working with diverse stakeholders and communities
• Experience in writing interpretive texts and exhibition publications
• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral presentations
• A self-motivational workstyle, with time management skills and the ability to work independently to set priorities and goals
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Word and Excel
