The Performing Arts Instructor II works within a team environment to develop and implement creative, age-appropriate Performing Arts programs for Strathcona County in the areas of drama, dance, vocal and instrumental music, musical theatre, and film/video editing.

These positions report to the Performing Arts Programmer at Festival Place.

The programs you may support in this position include:

  • Community and school programs scheduled from Monday – Friday from 8:30 am - 4 pm child/ youth/adult))
  • Community programs scheduled from 4 pm – 9 pm (child/youth/adult) and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am – 5 pm
  • Summer and other seasonal camps scheduled Monday-Friday 8 am - 5 pm (child/youth)
  • This position ranges from 3-20 hours per week
  • Summer hours may increase to 35 hours per week

Responsibilities:

Develop and deliver a range of performing arts programs, classes, camps, and workshops to a wide variety of audiences within an inclusive, positive, safe, and creative learning environment

  • • Plan, develop, and deliver activities that incorporate a variety of art forms, including but not limited to, drama, acting, dance, vocal and instrumental music, and musical theatre
  • Consider skill development and progression, arts education approaches to maximize participant learning, appreciation, and engagement
  • For children and youth, incorporate the interests of the children and support children’s emotional, artistic, and social development, creativity, and fundamental movement skill progression
  • For adults, incorporate relevant interests as well as opportunities for skill development and selfexpression
  • For seniors develop age-appropriate program incorporating principles that enhance well-being, improve quality of life, and combat isolation
  • For school groups, understand curriculum connections and teacher objectives, and desired outcomes to support educational success
  • Prepare materials and plans for each program
  • Ensure program spaces are prepared and safe and that materials and equipment are used in accordance with County OHS guidelines
  • Provide excellent guest service for program participants and the community
  • Collaborate and positively interact within a team environment
  • Manage forms, documents, and communications with class participants at the time of the class
  • Communicate any questions, issues, or concerns to the Recreation Programmer – Performing Arts
  • Assist with program documentation and administration and site preparation
  • Provide safe supervision to participants engaged in programs and ensure health and safety regulations are followed
  • Lead role in coordinating and delivering seasonal camp programs and activities
  • Provide administrative support to the operation of summer camps (i.e. waivers, pick up/drop forms, camp evaluations, communication with parents, etc.)
  • Collaborate and positively interact within a team environment

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Post-secondary education in performing arts, education or equivalent experience is an asset
  • Two years of work experience instructing performing arts and/or other programs to children and youth in group settings
  • Positive, proven leadership and team-building skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and demands
  • Ability to maintain high standards of respect, safety, quality, and cooperation
  • Time-management skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Outstanding problem-solving and communication skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Submission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Current First Aid and CPR (Level C) certification
  • Ability to lift 20 lbssupply totes as part of the job duties and stand for extended periods of time
