Talk and Tour: Historic Quilt Bed-Turning

Date: Mar 10, 2022

Deadline: Mar 26, 2022 - 1:00 pm

We invite you to join us for an old-fashioned quilt bed-turning event with Lucie Heins, acting curator of Daily Life and Leisure at Royal Alberta Museum (RAM). Lucie will be sharing the history of select quilts from the RAM collection vault, including several quilts featured in her book: Alberta Quiltmakers and their Quilts.

So … what’s a quilt bed-turning?
Historically, quilt bed-turnings were much-anticipated social events. Quilters would bring their finished works to a social gathering hosted at a quilter’s home where the quilts would be placed on a bed, one on top of the other. The top quilt would be discussed by the group, then folded down to reveal the next quilt and so on.
As we celebrate the release of Lucie Heins' new book: Alberta Quiltmakers and their Quilts, we are bringing this tradition to a museum setting. Lucie will share the stories of 18-20 quilts from the RAM collection vault in a bed-turning manner. You won't want to miss this unique way to discover the history of these rare quilts!

Event dates & times: Friday, March 25 at 10:30 am; 12:30 pm; 2:30 pm and Saturday, March 26 at 10:30 am & 1:00 pm.
