World Art Day, celebrated globally on April 15, is an opportunity to spotlight the art, artists, and arts organizations that enrich our daily lives. According to UNESCO, World Art Day helps reinforce the links between artistic creations and society, highlighting how artists contribute to sustainable development and a more diverse cultural landscape.
The Alberta Foundation for the Arts (AFA) promotes art as both a cornerstone of our quality of life and a significant economic driver for the province. Between 2018 and 2023, the estimated total economic output by arts organizations funded by the AFA was $2.4 billion, including $185 million that can be directly attributed to AFA funding. Showcasing the arts as not only something for everyone to enjoy, but an impactful economic driver that improves our quality of life. By supporting hundreds of artists and organizations annually, the AFA ensure that Alberta’s unique cultural tapestry is preserved for future generations.
With nearly 10,000 unique artworks that make up the AFA Art Collection, we are committed to making art accessible to all Albertans. At any given time 20 to 25% of the Collection is in public circulation through exhibition loans, extended loans, art placement programs, and touring programs like the Travelling Exhibition Program (TREX). Additionally, the September 2025 opening of the AFA art house in downtown Calgary provides a dedicated, free gallery space to share even more of Alberta’s creativity.
Beyond gallery walls, the AFA Art Collection includes public artworks installed throughout the province, enhancing the vibrancy and identity of the province’s municipalities.
In celebration of World Art Day, we are pleased to showcase Blake Senini’s Turn Turn Turn (2011), located at the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat.
