Workshop: Linocut Basics

In this course the basics of linocut printmaking will be taught with a focus on safe carving technique, good image design and the use of texture in the creation of compositions. Over the course of two evenings, participants will develop an image, carve it into a linoblock, and print a small edition of monochromatic prints. Participants should leave the workshop with a good foundation in the medium to allow them to continue with personal explorations.

This course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed.

  • How to transfer the image to the block
  • The basics of carving linoleum safely and efficiently
  • The techniques for dynamic mark making and texture in monochromatic linocut prints.

About the instructor:

Jonathan Creese is a Trinidadian artist, currently living, working, and studying in Calgary AB. Being introduced to art primarily from the realm of printmaking, his work uses the language and sensibilities of printmaking to highlight the realities of the cultural and socio political landscape of his homeland. As of November 26th 2024 he is interested in ways of representing quantitative data visually, particularly in relation to homicide statistics in Trinidad and Tobago.
