W&M Physical Theatre premieres new full-length La Luna
DATE :
DEADLINE: October 10, 2026 - 7:00 pm
W&M Dance Projects of Calgary Association presents La Luna, a new full-length dance-theatre work by W&M Physical Theatre, October 9 and 10, 2026 at the DJD Dance Centre (111 12 Ave SE) in Calgary.
Choreographed and directed by Melissa Monteros, La Luna began in 1988 as a short work for the children of Miles Avenue Elementary in Huntington Park, Los Angeles County, created for Monteros' thesis concert at UCLA. It was a formative piece for the Los Angeles–born choreographer, made in the Southern California where she grew up and where her family still lives — a world she recognized in Huntington Park, where families moved between English and Spanish and the bonds between generations were revered. It was there that she first discovered what a stage full of children can do to a room. Nearly forty years on, La Luna has been expanded into a 50-minute work for a cast of fourteen: seven professional dancers, including company co-founder Wojciech Mochniej, and seven Calgary children ages 7 to 11, who have rehearsed alongside the adult company since early September.
A story of moonlight, wonder, and the bond between parent and child, La Luna reflects W&M's long commitment to community-engaged professional dance and to bringing young performers onto the professional stage.
Performances: Friday, October 9 at 7 pm
Saturday, October 10 at 2 pm and 7 pm.
