Spectre of Comparison

The Alberta Society of Artists is pleased to present the solo exhibition “Spectre of Comparison” featuring the work of Alberta artist Kuhlien Migue. The exhibition runs March 12, 2025 – April 26, 2025, at the ASA Art Gallery, #222, 1235 – 26 Ave. SE, Calgary, Alberta. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm and parking is free. There will be an opening reception and artist talk Saturday, March 15, 1-4 pm. "The successive colonial and imperial regimes of Spain, the United States, and Japan in the Philippines produced postage stamps brimming with propaganda. Some of these stamps depicted Philippine landscapes overprinted with words that assert the control of whichever nation was in power at the time. This visually represents how colonial powers fought over ownership of the land for over four hundred years not only to gain resources but to assert their status as global powers. The paintings in this exhibition reference the text and landscapes depicted in these postage stamps as well as highlight native flora from the Philippines and their local names. This body of work narrates the history of colonial powers vying for control of the land and Filipinos’ efforts to maintain national identity." The Alberta Society of Artists is the oldest society of juried professional artists in the province, providing art education and exhibitions in public venues since 1931. The Society’s goal is to increase public awareness and appreciation of the visual arts in Alberta.
