FREE Artist Talk with Rhys Douglas Farrell

The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre would like to invite you for a special Artist Talk and to view the work created by our February Artist-in-Residence, Rhys Douglas Farrell.

The event takes place at the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre on Sunday, February 23. Doors will open at 2 pm with light snacks and drinks provided by KOAC. His talk will take place at 2:30 pm, and there will be time to view his work until the conclusion of the reception at 4 pm.

Rhys is joining KOAC for a month-long studio residency in February. The Artist in Residence program was inspired by Katie Ohe, one of the founders of KOAC, who has produced a remarkable body of work over her 60+ year career! Katie is a renowned artist, well known for both her sculpture work and bright, bold silkscreen prints, and Rhys continues to be inspired by her work. Reflecting on this opportunity, Rhys shared, “Throughout Ohe's career she has created many works that coincide with my interests in color, pattern and optical art. Therefore this opportunity will have a phenomenal impact on my artistic practice and research.”

While in residence, Rhys will develop a new body of work, sharing his research and creative process along the way. Engaging with the community, sharing his interests and ideas, as well as providing a unique experience for each viewer is an important aspect of his practice as an artist - he shares, “it is why I make art.” Throughout his residency, Rhys will explore the colours and patterns at the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre to develop a new exciting body of work inspired by his surroundings. We can’t wait to see his new creations bound to be infused with optical curiosity!

The Pumphouse Theatre is a vibrant facility with historical significance. It supports and presents all art forms and creates opportunities for engagement, enrichment, cultural experience, learning and inspiration, while serving all Calgarians. To enable this, the Quenten Doolittle Memorial Gallery provides accessible wall display space for Mohkinstsis (Calgary) visual artists to display and sell their work, free from commission.

IGNITE! is a festival dedicated to supporting, mentoring, and presenting emerging artists of all disciplines. IGNITE! allows artists to embrace risks in a supportive environment while providing resources, a bridge to the professional arts community, and meaningful opportunities for collaboration and community building with their peers.

For this exhibit, we are looking for work that is created by emerging artists. This includes artists with less than 5 years of pro-fessional experience creating or exhibiting their work. Submissions of any style, from realistic to abstract, and in any visual art medium will be considered, provided it meets all gallery requirements below. If selected to be the official art piece of IGNITE! 2025, the artist will receive an artist festival pass and an honorarium for the use of their image in marketing material.

Installation Requirements: All art MUST be equipped with picture hanging wire and D rings (a piece of metal hardware shaped like the letter D used on the back of frame or canvas as hooking device). Hanging cleats or flat metal hardware unfortunately will not be accepted. Dimensions must correlate with those provided on the submission form, otherwise they may not be installed upon being selected.

This gallery is intended to be available for in person and online viewing. Due to the uncertainty of COVID-19 pandemic, there is the possibility of this exhibit being online exclusively. All installation requirements are still necessary for this exhibit at this time.

Students' Union

Land’s End Ensemble and students of Mount Royal University’s Conservatory Program perform exciting works that push the boundaries of today’s performance practices and sonic experiences.

Featured works include Steve Reich’s classic work Clapping Music, Frank Ticheli’s minimalist-inspired In C Dorian, and Mary Kouyoumdjian’s Moerae inspired by the Greek mythology of the three fates.

Experience two world premieres: A Species of Wonder, a new work for mixed ensemble by acclaimed JUNO Award-winning composer Allan Gordon Bell, and Dragonfly, an exhilarating trio by Michael van der Sloot. The program also features Four Paintings by Leestemaker, a richly textured piano sextet by Vincent Ho.

The concert will conclude with Louis Andriessen’s Workers Union. Written for “any loud-sounding group of instruments,” this politically charged work unites all performers on stage for an unforgettable conclusion.

The concert begins at 7:30 p.m., with a pre-concert chat at 6:45 p.m.
