Space Survey for Live/Performing Arts Organizations in Calgary
BuckingJam Palace (BJP) Music Foundation is currently exploring what a purpose-built or renovated venue for small to mid-sized live/performing arts organizations might look like in Calgary. If you are a musician, collective, or small to mid-sized organization looking for space to create, produce, and present your work - we invite you to connect with us by filling out this survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfnMQIvMOEWnfDskkgPMnLfE0k893CX85Ol31KB3QGMMoDLVg/viewform?usp=share_link&ouid=110598892251061525209
Since 2014, BJP has been hosting local, national, and international jazz artists in our historic home in Mount Royal where musicians spend time collaborating, recording, and performing for our small audiences of 50. More recently, we have also been hosting concerts at external venues within Calgary to meet the demand of our touring artists and growing audiences.
We know that we are outgrowing our house concerts, but we still want to maintain the spirit of our house concerts and offer space for our musicians to not only perform; but also to create, record, and collaborate with each other. As such, we are looking for alternative venues and what it might look like to collaborate with other artists, collectives, and small to mid-sized organizations.
We have prepared a survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfnMQIvMOEWnfDskkgPMnLfE0k893CX85Ol31KB3QGMMoDLVg/viewform?usp=share_link&ouid=110598892251061525209 to start the conversation and to have a better understanding of your needs. The survey will take approximately 10 minutes to complete and we ask you to fill it out by Monday, December 1, 2025.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Aimee-Jo Benoit, Executive Director at BJP Music Foundation at ed@buckingjampalace.com

Behind the scenes: conserving Katie Ohe's sculpture Day and Night
What does it take to conserve a sculpture that has stood in Calgary for more than fifty years? Join us for a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how Katie Ohe’s beloved sculpture Day and Night was carefully restored and relocated from its original home in Prince’s Island Park to Devonian Gardens.
The evening begins with a short film created by Alexander Boyd, a member of the restoration team, and offers an insider’s view of the conservation process. It's an uncommon glimpse into the craft, care, and collaboration that goes into preserving public art.
Following the screening, take part in a Q&A with Sophia Zweifel, The City’s Public Art Conservator, and Alexander Boyd, who will share insights, stories, and reflections from the restoration.
To close the evening, enjoy a guided tour of the exhibition Fragment to Form | Katie Ohe and the Shape of Persistence, featuring additional works by the artist and a chance to experience Day and Night in its new home.

Artist's Choice
Born to Be Blue - Dick Der
Dick Der's artwork, Born to Be Blue, is featured in the AFA art house in downtown Calgary as part of the New Views exhibition
Born to Be Blue is part of a new series that deals with creating an illusion of depth and space with the use of color and drawing.
This piece was added to the AFA Art Collection in 2024 and is currently part of the New Views exhibition at the AFA art house in Calgary. It is currently featured on the art house "New Acquisitions" wall, which will be updated regularly with new works from the AFA Art Collection.

About the Artist
Dick Der was born in China and moved to Canada as a child. He graduated from the University of Alberta in 1974, earning his BFA.
According to the late arts journalist Gilbert Bouchard, Der possesses a “love of all things urban” that he expresses through “geometric works [that] depict abstract inner-city vistas [and] boast actual objects salvaged from downtown streets—metal rods, lengths of wire, hunks of rebar, bits of wood, cardboard, and squares of metal screen.” Such materials, said Bouchard, demonstrate “Der’s particular love of more derelict aspects of city life—old buildings and abandoned warehouses… [and] aged portions of legendary cosmopolitan megacities [such as] New York or Paris.”
Der says he aims at evoking a “tranquil, mystical, and spiritual experience” through his mixed-media collages and paintings, which may also contain Chinese calligraphy whose meanings he does not intend to be taken literally, but whose forms suggest a “connection between the past, present, and future.”
Der’s solo exhibitions in Edmonton include Studio Watch at the Edmonton Art Gallery, In the Rough at The Works Festival, and Chinatown Tango and Snapshots at the Scott Gallery in Edmonton. Several public, corporate, and private collections house Der’s work, including those of the Grand Prairie College, the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Camino Foundation, Anglo Continental Limited in Hong Kong, and the Singapore Eromatic Company. Der recently retired from the Department of Art and Design, Painting Division, at the University of Alberta.
