Overview  

Science Fiction is a self-directed residency that provides writers with the time and space to focus on their work away from the constraints of everyday life. During the two-week residency science fiction writers can take advantage of one-on-one mentorship opportunities with faculty, group discussions, and a community of artistic peers.
Faculty include Premee Mohamed, Ai Jiang, Amal El-Mohtar, and professional guest Ali Fisher.

Description

This two-week self-directed residency provides participants with individual accommodation and a small private studio for writers to focus, reconnect, and re-energize their writing practice. In addition, participants will be able to engage with other science fiction writers on the program.
As a flexible self-directed program with optional elements, the Science Fiction residency allows you to choose the amount of support you are looking for. 
Optional program elements include:

  • thematic teachings from science fiction specialists Premee Mohamed, Ai Jiang, Amal El-Mohtar, and professional guest Ali Fisher.
  • one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty to discuss ideas, experiences and obstacles.
  • Q & A sessions. 
  • public readings.
  • workshops to discuss useful techniques, devices and aspects.

Requirements

The residency is designed to cater to experienced, professional writers with a publication record looking to explore the future of Science Fiction writing and focus on works in progress.
Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The residency suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

This program is run in English and only accepts projects that are being written in English. English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.

Early Career Banff Artist in Residence - Summer 2025

Overview  

Early Career Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) Summer 2025 is an immersive program of studio practice, creative exploration, critical feedback, and mentorship for visual artists and curators in the early stages of their careers. 
Open to visual artists and curators working in all visual arts mediums, this program combines the artistic freedom of a self-directed residency with the benefits of technical and faculty support. As well as having the space to create, research, and experiment, participants are part of a community of emerging artists committed to developing and expanding their practice.

Description

Participants in this residency will be supported with:

  • lectures.
  • workshops.
  • feedback from experienced faculty members who will be available for both group and one-on-one consultations.

Artists are provided with a studio, as well as targeted access to our extensive facilities. This includes:

  • access to personal studio spaces equipped for creative work, available 24/7, providing a dedicated environment for artistic expression.
  • targeted access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical assistance and support.

Requirements

This residency is for individual artists and collaborative groups (of no more than two) who have

  • completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or 
  • equivalent experience and recognition from their peers acquired through traditional knowledge and practices. 

The program is designed to cater to visual artists at the early stage of their artistic careers, providing them with tailored opportunities for professional development and creative growth, including:

  • ceramicists.
  • curators.
  • painters.
  • paper artists.
  • photographers.
  • print-makers.
  • sculptors.

Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

Priority will be given to artists who have completed relevant training within five years and who have not previously attended a Visual Arts residency at Banff Centre.

Overview  

Horror Writing is a self-directed residency that provides writers with the time and space to focus on their work away from the constraints of everyday life. During this two-week residency horror writers can take advantage of one-on-one mentorship opportunities with faculty, group discussions, and a community of artistic peers. 
Faculty include horror writing specialists Jessica Johns, Shane Hawk, Cherie Dimaline, and professional guest Catharine Chen (Arsenal Pulp Press). 
All the program elements are optional, giving participants the flexibility to choose the amount of support they want.

Description

This two-week self-directed residency offers horror writers:

  • thematic teachings from faculty members and professional guests.
  • a community of artistic peers.
  • one-on-one workshopping with faculty.
  • optional group sessions exploring useful literary tools, aspects, and devices.
  • an opportunity to showcase your work at a public reading.
  • a personal studio space equipped for creative work.

The program is designed to cater to horror writers working at any stage of their artistic careers, providing them with tailored opportunities for professional development and creative growth.
Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works within the genre.

This program is run in English and only accepts projects that are being written in English. English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.

Eligibility

Applicants must be ages 18+ at the time of the program start date.

Basement Studio in Edmonton is looking for 1-2 renters this fall

Are you looking for affordable studio space in Edmonton?

The Basement Studio is looking for 1-2 artist renters to join this fall. We are located in the basement of the Blue Quill Community League in Edmonton, and we share a bright, open 1,200 square foot space with 5-6 artists each year. 

The move in date is Oct. 1, 2024. 

Renters get 24/7 access with your own key. There is free parking, bike racks and a 10-min walk from Century Park Station. The rent is split evenly between tenant artists, usually around $200 per month.

There are sinks and bathrooms on the main floor.

Unfortunately, the space is only accessible via stairs. 

The Blue Quill Community League is located at 11304 25 Ave NW, Edmonton AB.

2025 Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival
April 2 – 5, 2025

The Pumphouse Theatre has presented the Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival with the Alberta Drama Festival Association for over 30 years and we are excited to do so again! Registration for 12 spots will open on a first-come, first serve basis beginning September 18, 2025 at 12 pm.  The Festival is scheduled to be held April 2 – 5, 2025 in the Victor Mitchell Theatre.

One play is chosen by a professional adjudicator to represent Calgary at the Provincial One-Act Festival. Winning plays from each region may receive travel and food expenses reimbursement for their participation in the Provincial Festival by the Alberta Drama Festival Association.

Registration Requirements:

  • All registrations must be submitted no earlier than noon on September 18, 2024 with a completed registration form and a $60 non-refundable registration fee. 
  • The performing group is responsible for royalty payments.  A letter confirming permission from the publisher or playwright must be included.
  • A clean draft copy of the script must be delivered by the January 15 deadline.  Photocopies will only be accepted for an original script. Outlines for collective creations will be accepted, but may not be eligible for Outstanding New Work. Improvised shows are not eligible.
  • Payment can be made over the phone (credit), in-person (debit, credit, cash, cheque), by mail (cheques) or by e-transfer. Make cheques payable to the Pumphouse Theatres Society. E-transfers are sent to admin@pumphousetheatre.ca with the message “OAPF Registration Fee”.
  • Participants who are members of CAEA, ACTRA, or IATSE are not eligible to participate in their professional vocation.
  • Plays must be one act in length. Performances between 10 and 60 minutes. No excerpts.
  • Each group is responsible for supplying its own technicians for stage management and light and sound operation. We can provide training to operators.
  • Each show must be set up in 10 minutes and struck in 5 minutes.
  • Casts shall be predominantly adult and from CALGARY.
  • All performances and participants must adhere to the ADFA Rules and Guidelines. More information can be found on the ADFA website: adfa.ca/about/rules-regulation

Awards & prizes are presented for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Director, Outstanding Performances, Outstanding Technical Merit, and Outstanding New Work!

Registration for the Calgary Region One-Act Play Festival will open Wednesday September 18, 2025 @ Noon. Registration will close when all slots are filled or by January 31, 2025.  Registration is on a first come first serve basis.

Call for Artists: 2024-2025 Shop at SAAG Feature Artists

Shop at SAAG artist call

The Shop at SAAG Feature Artist program offers local artists and artisans a unique opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in a contemporary art gallery. Past feature artists include Nicole Riedmueller, Arianna Richardson, Cindy Baker, Lauren Kurmey, Jessica Colley, and more. 

As the feature artist, you will have the opportunity to exhibit a selection of your work in a prominent display in the Shop at SAAG for 12 to 13 weeks. Gallery staff will help you develop a unique design for the shop space to showcase your work. You’ll receive a special consignment rate and have the opportunity to work with Gallery staff to develop a public program based on your art practice. You will also be offered a free table at our Summer or Holiday Market. We will highlight your work on the Shop at SAAG’s website and online shop and through the Gallery’s social media and e-newsletter. The feature artist will also be recognized at the exhibition opening reception that aligns with your show. 
We are currently accepting applications for our Shop at SAAG Feature Artist for the following 2024-25 exhibition blocks:

  • Oct. 12 2024 - Jan. 11 2025
  • Jan. 25 2025 - Apr. 19 2025
  • May 3 2025 - Jun. 21 2025

Eligibility

This call invites applications from artists from all backgrounds and in all stages of their career. Artists must be at least 18 to be considered and a resident of Alberta. We encourage you to consider submitting a body of work with a consistent theme or aesthetic. The Shop at SAAG aims to support the work of local artists, so artists from Lethbridge and the surrounding area will be prioritized.

Artistic Director - Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts

Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts (Rosebud) is seeking a creative, and energetic individual to serve as its next Artistic Director. Reporting to the Executive Director and  the Board of Governors, the Artistic Director will be responsible for developing and implementing the strategic direction for all artistic programming within the Theatre and School. The Artistic Director will be a leader in the Rosebud community with a strong desire to engage with the wider theatre, and theatre training, communities in Alberta and across Canada. The ideal candidate will understand and embrace Rosebud’s unique position in the cultural and spiritual landscape of the province, will offer an inspiring and unifying artistic vision for arts programming and training, and will have a drive to build public and private sector support to deliver on strategic artistic priorities and embrace collaboration with the Rosebud team to maximize earned and contributed revenue.

As the artistic leader of the organization, the Artistic Director will play an active role as a thought- partner to the Executive Director in planning for the organization’s overall advancement. Supporting and partnering with artists, staff, students, board and volunteers, the Artistic Director will operationalize the strategic plan while building a thriving, creative and diverse culture serving Rosebud patrons, students, artists, and the Rosebud community. The Artistic Director will conceptualize and implement a plan to continue to grow Rosebud’s artistic objectives, collaborating with the Executive Director and Board of Governors in devising and realizing successful artistic strategies for the future of the organization.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity for an artistic professional who can bring together their vision, experience, and passion for theatre to Rosebud. The Artistic Director must have an interest in training the next generation of storytellers and working with Rosebud School of the Arts and will want to invest themselves in the success and growth of Rosebud and its educational programs. The Artistic Director will be a person who will find personal fulfillment in being part of the future of Rosebud.

The Organization

In 1973, LaVerne Erickson, started the Rosebud Camp of the Arts as a summer outreach program for Calgary youth who had rarely been outside of the city. The summer programs soon expanded into weekend vacations throughout the school year and in 1977 the Rosebud Fine Arts High School was formed with five students attending.

As part of Rosebud’s centenary in 1983, the school’s drama department launched the Rosebud Historical Music Theatre. Staff and students wrote the play, rehearsed it, and performed it on an outdoor stage, drawing hundreds of interested theatre goers. Thus, began the widely acclaimed Rosebud Theatre which now attracts thousands annually to its productions.

Today, Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts encompasses a post-secondary guild school focused on professional training in various areas of theatre and a professional company producing five plays throughout the year in two venues, the Rosebud Opera House (seating capacity 232)and the Rosebud Studio Stage (Black Box Theatre, seating 65-95). Offering matinee and evening shows up to seven times a week, each Opera House performance includes a full buffet and live dinner music in the quaint setting of the historic Haskayne-Kenney Mercantile.

Artistic Director Roles & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director in all financial matters, and to the Board of Governors in matters of artistic programming, the Artistic Director is the organization’s guiding artistic visionary and will cultivate relationships between the Theatre, the School and the Community. This individual will provide artistic leadership, theatre leadership, organizational management and administration, community building, mentorship and training, educational programs and will support the organization with creativity and vision in accordance with the strategic plan, objects, and all policies of the company.

Artistic Leadership

  • Lead all elements of the successful presentation of Rosebud productions, special artistic events, collaborations, and co-productions whilst upholding the mission, vision, and values.
  • Select and develop the annual season of productions and creatively balance artistic excellence with financial and operational realities.
  • Oversee all casting and production-related activities for the organization, including putting together show-related creative teams.
  • Serve as an artist within the season of artistic offerings by Rosebud (e.g., as a director, playwright, actor, designer, dramaturge, or other creative presence).
  • Direct a minimum of two shows per season.
  • Identify, assign, and manage all guest directors for Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts productions.
  • Conceive of new, sustainable structures for building internal strengths to support artistic operations.
  • Take an active role in production meetings and provide guidance and expertise for problem solving through the production process.
  • Be active in Rosebud’s thriving theatre scene as a welcoming colleague, collaborating with other theatres in the region, provincially and across Canada as appropriate.
  • Possess an interest in new play development and curate relationships with playwrights creating original work that may be in alignment with Rosebud’s vision and values..

Rosebud Leadership

Together with the Executive Director:

  • Lead and act as an ambassador for Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts.
  • Develop a positive workplace culture, leading by example to align with the brand, vision, mission, and values of Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts.
  • Work collaboratively with the Management Team and the Board of Governors to implement
  • the organization’s strategic plan identifying short and long term artistic and business goals, budgets, and operational plans.
  • Work with the Executive Director on budgets, forecasts and reporting.
  • Be a collaborative partner to the Executive Director in Board of Governor activities. Act as the primary artistic liaison to the Board of Governors, accountable for timely, accurate and transparent communication, and attend Board meetings as required.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with external industry partners, stakeholders (public and private funders) and producing partners.

Management and Administration

  • Lead the artistic vision of the organization in a highly collaborative and communicative manner, always showing deep respect and appreciation to artists, staff, students, audiences, and stakeholders.
  • Inspire staff to do their best work and support their professional development as individuals and as leaders within the theatre community.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in all strategic planning processes.
  •  Provide proactive leadership and management to artistic staff and maintain a positive working environment.
  • Demonstrate critical and strategic thinking, and excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Coordinate and conduct annual performance reviews for direct report staff members which include measurable results.
  •  Develop and actively monitor artistic budgets and be accountable for their outcome.
  • Create the seasonal production calendar in collaboration with the leadership team.
  • Work collaboratively with Management and Staff to promote educational programs, and learning and artistic opportunities for students.
  • Communicate with donors, sponsors, and subscribers throughout the season, inspiring their continued support.

Community Building

  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to the values of Rosebud Theatre & School of the Arts by promoting and creating an environment where the good of the community is held in the highest regard, and the adventure of grace is evident in the ethos of the work.
  • Create strong relationships and foster reciprocal community engagement between Rosebud and other theatres, arts organizations, nonprofits, schools, and community organizations within Rosebud, the region and beyond.
  • Build networks with other theatres and search for the most exciting professional artists locally, regionally, and nationally.
  • Lead by example by actively promoting a culture that embraces Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Accessibility, and community engagement.
  • In collaboration with the marketing department, develop and implement marketing ideas for season productions.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Rosebud in interviews, conferences, and public relations opportunities.
  • Attend and participate in all of Rosebud’s major fundraising and patron events.

Mentorship & Training

  • Ensure that Rosebud is offering programs and initiatives that prioritize accessibility for the entire community and artistic opportunities for both in the Theatre and the School.
  • Support and provide creative inspiration for the Production Department to be a local leader for the stage and beyond.
  • Serve as a sounding board for all departments to ensure that all programs and programming are fully integrated with all artistic activities and vision.
  • Ensure that Rosebud is offering programs and initiatives that prioritize accessibility for the entire community and artistic opportunities for both in the Theatre and the School.

Education

  • Support the programs of Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA), by providing artistic vision, mentorship, apprenticeship opportunities, and training throughout the season and curate a season of RSA student productions that facilitate opportunities for challenge and growth.
  • Create apprenticeship opportunities for senior students during the Rosebud Theatre season.
  • Teach advanced classes and/or direct student productions as appropriate.
  • Support the mission of the School in providing arts training within a community of faith-based artists, where students are inspired to become catalysts for transformation in our world.

Embrace what makes RSA unique, such as:

  • Every year students travel to New York City; London, England; or Canada’s West Coast to immerse themselves in theatre, workshops, and tours.
  • Students can attain apprenticeship opportunities with Rosebud Theatre.
  • Mentorship students receive acting and vocal coaching in small groups.

Proactive, dynamic, independent, self-motivated, detail and people-oriented, the Artistic Director will have exceptional artistic, social, verbal and written communication skills and value frequent interaction and collaboration with others. The Artistic Director will be an experienced and entrepreneurial professional with the vision to actively pursue Rosebud’s goals with creativity and determination and will have a high degree of personal accountability – with a commitment to exceeding expectations.

This individual will balance tasks and projects with a sense of urgency and possess superlative interpersonal and communication skills that articulate compelling verbal and written messages for support. A self-sufficient and self-managed arts professional with a highly organized approach, the Artistic Director will have the ability to achieve organizational objectives with artists, staff, students, board members, volunteers, donors, and prospective supporters. This individual will bring an affinity for Rosebud’s mission, vision and values along with a passion to positively impact the organization’s long-term success.

Qualifications

As an organization offering post-secondary training, a degree in higher education is an asset. Qualified candidates will have 5 – 7 years of progressive professional experience at a leadership level with increasing responsibility in an artistic leadership role, in theatre, performing arts, or educational sector. Candidates must possess expertise in, and willingness to, mentor and develop the next generation of storytellers and must have the ability and desire to relocate to Rosebud.

Get Started with Letterpress printing and try different types of letterpress printing presses!

Looking for a quick and  beautiful way to do relief printing? Using printing presses will give you the speed and flexibility to take your art to the next level.

Compatible with Linocut printing, Polymer plates and Woodcuts, this class gives you the knowledge to lock these things up with lead type or on their own in their two user friendly presses!

No experience required.

What you’ll learn: ​​​​

  • Operation of Vandercook SP-15 Cylinder Press
  • Operation of Craftsman Superior and Kelsey Platen Press
  • Tools and Terminology for Letterpress
  • Basic Lock-Up Techniques
  • Printing Linocut and Type
  • Machine Clean-Up
  • Troubleshooting printing issues

About the instructor:

Michelle Wiebe is a Cochrane, Alberta-based artist focused primarily on painting, printmaking and letterpress. With a great fondness for all things print, you can find her fixing rusty presses or spending time printing at Alberta Printmakers. Michelle is a passionate instructor with a deep love for teaching, she makes it her goal that students leave her class with quality work and the confidence to continue building their new skills.

Workshop Fee

$135.00* prices not subject to GST
*Access to using the A/P studio equipment, including as a workshop participant, requires an A/P membership. Annual memberships are $30 and $10 for current students and current recipients of AISH. Membership fees can be applied directly to your workshop registration.

This workshop includes all project supplies, students are recommended to:

  • Bring image ideas, digital files or other creative prompts
  • Arrive no more than 10 minutes before class.
  • Park in the stalls located in front of A/P or use free street parking.
  • Bring a lunch and water bottle.
  • Bring a notebook/sketchbook and pen.
  • Bring reading glasses if you need them for fine work.
  • Wear suitable clothing for working with ink and/or a work apron.
  • Wear close toed shoes and avoid overly loose long sleeves.
  • Tie back long hair when operating machinery.
  • Personal PPE (if uncomfortable with Shared Studio PPE)

About the workshop:

Photolithography is a technique perfect for anyone interested in photography or drawing in printmaking. This course will cover a range of possibilities to transform photographs, digital creations, or drawn material into richly detailed lithographs. Participants will learn to process a photosensitive plate, exposing it to light to develop a printable image.
This course is suitable for all levels with no prior experience needed.

What you’ll learn: ​​​​

  • How to prepare a photographic file for lithography printing in photoshop
  • How to make drawings that will expose for photolithography plates
  • How to develop a photolithography plate
  • How to prepare paper for registration
  • How to print a photolithograph plate properly using the press

About the instructor:

Jamie-Lee Girodat completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Lethbridge and a Master of Fine Arts in Printmaking at the University of Alberta. Her interest in genetic history, health, and ethics informs her practice in print media, drawing, and animation. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has taught at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Mount Allison University in New Brunswick, and is currently teaching at Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary.
