Published and edited in Winnipeg with contributions from writers across the continent, the tri-annual magazine is known internationally for its outstanding writing, striking visual portfolios, and deeply informed engagement with artists and ideas from around the world.

Border Crossings explores contemporary art through essays, interviews, reviews, photography, and criticism that challenge, surprise, and inspire readers. Every issue reflects a commitment to thoughtful cultural conversation and editorial excellence.

For 43 years, the magazine has occupied a vital place at the geographic centre of North America while maintaining a global outlook. Over that time, Border Crossings has published more than four hundred interviews with significant contemporary artists, earning a reputation for intelligent, adventurous, and distinctive arts criticism.

We are looking for someone who shares our curiosity, passion for contemporary culture, and commitment to exceptional work.

The Role:

The Editor provides overall editorial leadership and operational management for Border Crossings, a not-for-profit arts magazine. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, the Editor serves as the magazine’s “public face” while overseeing editorial direction, production, financial sustainability, fundraising, governance, and staff leadership.

The ideal candidate will be an organized, creative, and astute leader, who brings the capacity and vision to steward the magazine into a new era.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and implement the magazine’s editorial vision in alignment with the Board’s mandate.
  • Direct, commission, edit, and approve all editorial and visual content for publication.
  • Collaborate with production staff and designers on layout, issue planning, advertising, and print production.
  • Oversee subscriptions, distribution, marketing, and promotional strategies.
  • Represent the magazine with funding agencies, government bodies, media, contributors, and the public.
  • Manage organizational operations, budgeting, financial planning, and reporting in consultation with the Board.
  • Coordinate and support grant applications, revenue development, fundraising initiatives, and donor engagement.
  • Work with the Board Chair to support governance, strategic planning, and organizational development.
  • Foster a collaborative, respectful, and productive workplace culture while supervising staff and daily operations.

Qualifications:

  • Strong editorial judgment and experience in publishing.
  • Demonstrated experience in organizational management, budgeting, and fundraising.
  • Excellent writing, communication, relationship-building, and public representation skills.
  • Knowledge of grant funding processes, non-profit governance, and arts administration is an asset.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a collaborative and deadline-driven environment.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada.
