Youth Singers of Calgary is seeking a Tech Director to lead sound production technology across our programs and performances. Working in close partnership with the Production Manager, this role provides technical expertise, leadership, and oversight to ensure a high standard of production in both our facility and community performances.

Youth Singers of Calgary (YSC) is a vibrant, community-driven non-profit that brings music, movement, dance, and drama to over 500 young performers each year, with a mandate to create a joyful, inclusive space where young people can grow, express themselves, and shine through the performing arts.

YSC operates year-round, supported by a passionate mix of artistic staff, a nimble administrative team, and a powerhouse volunteer community contributing over 36,000 hours annually. Our home is the amazing ATCO Performing Arts Centre (APAC), a creative hub with rehearsal studios, a recording space, costume and set workshops, and more.

Position Summary

The Technical Director is responsible for delivering high-quality technical production across YSC’s performances, events, and facility. This position requires advanced skills in live sound and audio production, strong organizational and project management abilities, and the capacity to lead teams, manage resources, and adapt under pressure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate technical elements for rehearsals, performances, events, and external engagements
  • Determine technical needs for productions, including sound, lighting, staging, recording, and video support
  • Operate sound and/or lighting equipment for performances and events as required
  • Coordinate and support technical personnel, contractors, and volunteers during productions and events
  • Provide technical support for external rentals in collaboration with the APAC Manager
  • Ensure studios and performance spaces are set up, organized, and event-ready
  • Maintain technical equipment and supplies, including basic inventory tracking, maintenance coordination, and recommending purchases as needed
  • Support audio recording, editing, and digital file organization for archival and promotional purposes
  • Assist with video capture and coordination to support performances and marketing initiatives
  • Contribute to production planning, scheduling, communication, and safe technical operations

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Strong musicianship
  • Experience supporting live productions or events in a technical role
  • Practical knowledge of live sound operation, with familiarity in audio recording/editing and basic lighting and video systems
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and adapt in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working collaboratively with performers, staff, volunteers, contractors, and clients
  • Ability to support and guide volunteers or casual technical personnel in a positive and professional manner
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a calm, flexible approach 
  • Commitment to maintaining safe, organized, and efficient workspaces and event operations

Compensation and Employment details

  • Compensation ranges from $25 - $28 per hour based on experience
  • Contract position, estimated 20-30 hours per week, varying with times of the year
  • Discounts on YSC tuition fees
  • Part-time, onsite, with flexibility for hybrid work. Hours of work vary as YSC is a seven-day/week operation with most rehearsals and performances occurring in the evenings and on weekends.
