Art Acquisition by Application Expert Panel comments

April 1, 2025 deadline
General Expert Panel comments

Comments made by the expert panel during its assessment of the applications submitted to the April 1, 2025 Art Acquisition by Application program include:

  • The expert panel thanks all artists for their submissions to the Art Acquisitions by Application program. Your participation contributes to the continuing development of Alberta's cultural legacy and demonstrates the vitality of our visual arts community. Every submission, regardless of outcomes, makes a valuable contribution to the selection process, demonstrates the health of the program and assists with future planning for the AFA collection.
  • Where feasible, please use archival quality materials to support the long-term preservation of the artworks. The AFA Art Collection is intended to be held in perpetuity.
  • Please consider when submitting artworks that the AFA is an active collection. Works need to be durable enough to withstand frequent handling and installation.
  • We recommend that artworks include secure, reliable hanging systems and/or supports that are robust enough to withstand multiple installations. Clear instructions on how to install artworks are appreciated and help ensure proper care during exhibitions.
  • For photographs or print-based works, please ensure edition numbers and relevant details are included in the submission.
  • When possible, include clear documentation and high-quality images of the artworks that clearly convey the materials and the techniques used. This will assist the panel in understanding the physical qualities of the work.
  • Please ensure that your artist statement directly relates to the specific artworks submitted. Insight into each work helps the panel better understand your practice and the conceptual framework behind the artworks.
  • Inclusion of a focused, art CV/Resume highlighting exhibitions, education, residencies, or other related activities is helpful. If your practice is less traditional or you have been active in other ways, a written explanation of your practice, experience and commitment to your art is equally valuable and should be included.
