Crocus Hunt and Sketch Walk

April 27, 1 pm.
Nose Hill – Brisebois Parking Lot on John Laurie Blvd NW (Many Owls)
Difficulty: Easy

A hike to find and draw the first blooms of spring, no previous art experience necessary!

The furry prairie crocus (Pulsatilla nuttalliana) is a beloved sign of spring in Alberta. Join us on Nose Hill to hunt – and draw –  the earliest crocuses. We’ll bring our sketchbooks and check the fescue and poke around the south facing slopes. We’ll talk botany and history and jot sketches. Hikers who don’t draw are welcome to take notes and photos. Let’s search for spring together!

Why you should join us:

  • Hike & draw on Nose Hill with a professional artist/author/sketchbooker.
  • Learn about nature sketching/botany/history.
  • Connect with the outdoors and practice your drawing.

Award-winning artist/author Carolyn Fisher has illustrated nine picture books, four of which she also wrote. Her book Summer Feet (with writer Sheree Fitch) won the David Booth Prize at the Canadian Children’s Book Awards. In addition to teaching at art college for seven years, Carolyn has talked to thousands of kids and adults about writing, art, and making books. She investigates science and nature by sketchbook from her home in Calgary. See more at www.carolynfisher.com or follow her on social media (Instagram: @carolyn_fisher_illustration).

Registration is by donation on our website.

FREE Artist talk with Anna Semenoff at the Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre

The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre is pleased to invite you to an Artist Talk and reception showcasing the work of our March/April Artist-in-Residence, Anna Semenoff.

Sunday, April 27
Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre: 244034 Horizon View Road Calgary, AB T3Z 3M5

Doors open at 2 pm | Artist Talk at 2:30 pm | Reception until 4 pm
Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

Over the past two months, Anna has been in residence at KOAC, using the studio to explore sculptural interpretations of architectural arches. Her work considers the symbolic and structural roles of arches—as thresholds, as connectors, and as conduits for meaning.

“Arches, as architectural elements, are historically seen in windows, doors, tunnels, bridges—entrances and exits. They both connect and distinguish space, allowing one to cross over or pass through. Structurally, the arch seems to follow both logic and intuition, and my work aims to consider this overlap.” – Anna Semenoff

During the artist talk, Anna will speak about the concepts informing her practice, including:

  • the influence of modern architecture on perception,
  • the tensions between technological advancement and intuitive understanding,
  • and how evolving structures shape our relationship to reality and meaning.

She reflects on how the lightness and clarity of modern architecture—often conveyed through glass—is structurally supported by hidden forces like reinforced concrete. This duality prompts broader questions.

Anna writes, "In my work, I consider ways in which technological evolutions enhance, and diminish our relationship with the world. Is it possible that the appearance of reality no longer lines up with an intuitive understanding of it? With a general and cultural assumption that anything is technologically possible, where does meaning come from?"

Join us for an afternoon of thoughtful conversation and a chance to view Anna's sculptural works in person.

RSVP via Eventbrite: www.eventbrite.ca/e/free-artist-talk-with-anna-semenoff

To get to the artist talk, walk down the main pathway to Katie Ohe's studio, which is the first building on the left from the parking lot.
