Work of the Week: Ron Myren
DATE :
The former home of prominent landscape painter Ron Myren, in Edmonton, has been designated a municipal historic resource by the City of Edmonton. The home was originally built in 1925 by Charles and Mabel Barker and sold to the Myren family in 1976.
In recognition of his former home receiving this significant designation, we are pleased to share his artwork, View from the Top of Nigel Pass, Jasper (1997), which is one example of his unique style capturing the beauty of Alberta. It was created based on the field notes (sketches) he composed while hiking up the Nigel Pass.
About the artist
Myren was born in Galloway, British Columbia in 1937 and studied at the Alberta College of Art (now the Alberta University of the Arts) in Calgary. From 1966 to 1980, he worked at the Edmonton Art Gallery (now the Art Gallery of Alberta) as the Chief Preparator and Registrar. He also taught drawing from 1970 to 1973 and painting from 1983 to 1987 at the Art Gallery.
Myren was well known in Alberta for his oil and landscape paintings, especially his works that captured areas west of Edmonton. His artwork was defined by his unique brushwork, an essential component to his painting style, as it evokes feelings of dense forests and vibrant undergrowth.
His lush and intimate landscape paintings are cared for in collections across Alberta, including the AFA Art Collection. He passed away in 2003 in Chemanius, British Columbia.
