Mountain Writers Intensive 2025

Mountain Writers Intensive is a three-week residency for eight writers working on mountain narratives, environmental journalism, stories of adventure, or projects with an environmental theme. Writers can work in any genre (fiction, nonfiction, journalism, or poetry), and will enjoy dedicated, uninterrupted writing time in a spectacular mountain setting, the communality of a small group of artistic peers and support from renowned faculty.

Adventure Filmmakers Workshop 2025

The Adventure Filmmakers Workshop is an exceptional chance for independent and emerging filmmakers to advance their skills under the guidance of two of the world’s premier and proven adventure filmmakers. During a jam-packed ten days in the fall, participants will hone their craft, strengthen their skills, and network and mingle with fellow filmmakers, industry insiders, and decision-makers. 

This all takes place within the core of the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival, where epic stories are told through the eyes of adventurers, authors, photographers, and filmmakers from around the globe.

Program days will be filled with hands-on practice, lively discussion, and brainstorming. Teaching sessions with experienced faculty and guest speakers will help participants sharpen their narrative and vision, organize their workflow, develop audio and editing techniques, and perfect their pitches. Participants will also have access to potential mentors, collaborators, sponsors, and backers. 

In addition to meals and accommodation, participants will have access to production spaces where they can work on their projects, share ideas and foster a creative community.

The program is designed to cater to filmmakers with a strong desire to take the next step in all aspects of their filmmaking, including pre-production, pitching, location skills, editing, and distribution. A strong knowledge of technical sound, camera, and editing is essential.

Banff Artist in Residence - Fall 2025

Banff Artist in Residence (BAiR) - Fall 2025 is designed for visual artists at any stage of their career to focus on their practice in a supportive learning environment. 

Over five weeks, participants are encouraged to self-direct their research and time, as well as cultivate new directions in their work. The experience of artists in residence is further supported through individual studio visits with faculty, workshops, and lectures. In addition, participants have the opportunity to build community, create connections, and share their work with other artists-in-residence and the public.

This program is designed for participation over the entire program period. Variable dates will not be considered.

Participants in this residency will be supported with:

  • lectures.
  • workshops.
  • peer dialogue.
  • feedback from experienced faculty members who will be available for both group and one-on-one consultations.

Artists are provided with a studio, as well as targeted access to our extensive facilities. This includes:

  • access to personal studio spaces equipped for creative work, available 24/7, providing a dedicated environment for artistic expression.
  • targeted access to shared production facilities and knowledgeable staff who are available to provide technical assistance and support.

Facility access is based on availability of facilitators and priority goes to those requesting access in their initial applications. 

This residency is for individual artists and collaborative groups (of no more than two) who have:

  • completed formal training in visual arts at the post-secondary level, or 
  • equivalent experience and recognition from their peers acquired through traditional knowledge and practices. 

The program is designed to cater to visual artists at all stages of their artistic careers, providing them with tailored opportunities for professional development and creative growth, including:

  • ceramicists
  • digital media artists
  • painters
  • paper artists
  • photographers
  • print-makers
  • sculptors

Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

Priority will be given to artists who have not attended a Visual Arts residency at Banff Centre in the past three years.

Early Career Writers of Young Adult and Children's Books 2025

This self-directed writing residency supports new writers of young adult and children’s books at varying levels of accomplishment—from not-yet-published writers to those with one published book—to improve their writing skills and expand their practice, taking it to the next level. 

Participants in Early Career Writers of Young Adult and Children's Books will have the opportunity to work closely with faculty Jordan Scott, Jen Ferguson, and Tanya Boteju, and professional guest David Robertson (Tundra Books) as well as a community of artistic peers. With one-on-one mentorship sessions, faculty talks, and public events, this energizing and transformative residency will help writers build critical vocabulary as well as community, making them better critics of their own and others’ work. 

Description

This two-week residency has a flexible format that allows participants to choose the amount of programming and support they are looking for.

Optional elements include:

  • thematic talks from specialist faculty and guests.
  • one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty to discuss ideas, experiences and obstacles.
  • Q & A sessions.
  • workshops to explore techniques, aspects, and devices writers may find useful in their practice.
  • public reading opportunities.

All participants will have individual accommodation and a small private studio where they can focus on their writing practice. 

The residency is designed to cater to any new writer of young adult or children’s books interested in mentorship, public reading opportunities, and feedback from faculty and fellow participants. 

The residency will provide participants with tailored opportunities for professional development and creative growth and is open to writers with:

  • no publications
  • a few publications, or 
  • a first book for young adults or children. 

Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

This program is run in English and only accepts projects that are being written in English. English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.

Comics and Graphic Novels 2025

Comics and Graphic Novels is a self-directed residency that considers how creatives use this unique media as a place for personal narrative, memoir, and exploration. The residency provides writers with the time and space to delve deep into their creative project away from the constraints of everyday life, take advantage of an artistic community of peers, and consult with experienced faculty. 

Residency faculty and guests specializing in comics, illustration, publishing, and writing include Matt Madden, Bishakh Som, Tom Hart, and professional guest Michel Vrana (Black Eye Books). Participants can take part in individual mentoring sessions with faculty as well as group sessions to discuss their work and project. 

This two-week residency has a flexible format that allows participants to choose the amount of programming and support they are looking for. 

Optional elements include:

  • thematic talks from specialist faculty and guests.
  • one-on-one mentoring sessions with faculty to discuss ideas, experiences and obstacles that participants may be encountering in the genre of comics and graphic novels.
  • Q & A sessions.
  • workshops to explore techniques, aspects, and devices writers may find useful in their practice.
  • public readings where writers can share their work.

All participants will have individual accommodation and a small private studio where they can focus, reconnect, and re-energize their writing practice. 

The program is designed to cater to experienced writers, graphic novelists/cartoonists, writer/illustrators, or writer and illustrator pairings looking to explore the future of visual and literary techniques and focus on works in progress.

Participants will benefit most if they are comfortable working autonomously in an unstructured environment. The program suits those focused on:

  • working on a specific project.
  • creating new works.

While this program is run in English, it will accept projects that are being written in English, French, Bengali and Spanish. English is the language of Banff Centre correspondence.

What you will get to do here:

This position plays a vital role in leading and coordinating arts education initiatives, serving as the site coordinator and teaching artist coordinator for the ConocoPhillips Hub for Inspired Learning. In this role, you will act as the primary liaison for educators, artists, and logistics teams-ensuring smooth coordination of bussing, scheduling, supplies, and communications. Under the guidance of the Associate Director, you will design and facilitate arts-based workshops that align with curriculum objectives and provincial education goals, fostering meaningful connections between the arts and student learning.

As the performance coordinator and curriculum connector for Arts Commons Presents (ACP) Education, you will oversee the fulfillment of ACP Education performances, working closely with the box office team to manage logistics and ensure seamless event execution. 

You will also play a key mentorship role, supporting teaching artists in both in-class and online learning environments, while coordinating workshops, special events, and ad hoc programs that inspire creativity and engagement. Beyond program facilitation, you will take the lead in essential education administration tasks, including documentation, archiving, and collecting feedback to enhance future programming.

Above all, you will be an essential part of a collaborative and dynamic team, ensuring that both teaching artists and students experience high-quality, innovative, and accessible arts education.

Strategic Objectives:

Lead and enhance Arts Commons Education programs by effectively coordinating teaching artists, performances, and curriculum connections while strengthening community ties, optimizing resources, and supporting the growth of local teaching artists to create impactful arts-based learning experiences for students and educators.

Nice to have:

  • Previous experience with Tessitura & ArtsVision, an asset
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle or means of transportation, as required for attending to offsite meetings
