“I will eat bread and water and do this because this is what you want me to do.”
-Esther Suzanne Scott
Once upon a time, a young girl caught the eye of a puppet master who decided she would become a star. He spotted her gifts early, cultivated them, and, when she was ready, revealed her talents to the world. Anxious and perplexed but compelled to perform at the puppet master’s command, she felt moved to share her gifts with the world. She tried over and over to dazzle her audience. At times, she fell flat. But mostly, she succeeded, erupting like a supernova in a cacophony of retinal chaos, finally exhausting every last ounce of herself and dropping dead after the performance of a lifetime.
So goes the tale of A Star—Esther Suzanne Scott’s artistic alter ego and the title of her latest exhibition at dhARTworld. Blending divine inspiration with the exhaustion of daily routine, Scott constructs an allegory for her own creative practice. As is characteristic of her work, autobiography and dreamy fiction intertwine, stitched together with candy-coloured thread. These paintings evoke Scott’s covenant with a higher being to be an artist at all costs: a devotional compulsion to take the stage, regardless of what unfolds behind the scenes, and dazzle us with the performance.
